Creativity wasn’t always my thing. I was more of a nerd (Still am, just hide it better!). When I first started filming, I would have said I liked editing more than shooting (Which is no longer even close to true) and colour grading wasn’t necessary. . .ahhh how things change. Now I’m literally head over heels in love with being behind the camera and colour grading would have to be my next favourite thing!

I’ve been on these tools of my trade for about 20 years. . .and it all happened by accident. I had a really bad accident during a pretty difficult time in my life. I begged my Dad to buy me a camera so I could film my mates wakeboarding from the back of the boat while my shattered leg got better over the Summer. That accident changed my life and set me on what has now been a driving force and passion in my life. I found purpose through the lens and such pleasure in producing from beginning to end.

I think people now get hung up on the kinds of jobs they do, the kinds of portfolio pieces they have and show - want to not get pigenholed into doing the same kinds of work, or not get known as the “Insert specific niche” person. Me? I actually don’t really mind what I shoot - and I will put as much effort into a piece for a chef, as I would for a distiller or one of the worlds biggest corporations. I just have one desire and it’s super simple. My client has to care. Not just care because it’s their job. . .I mean actually care because it really means something to them. If I’m going to live and breathe something, when I deliver it, I want it to really shift the emotional plane on which my client is operating.  Because the outcome we are chasing is never easy. . .exceptional, not acceptable, is what I set out to achieve. No matter the subject matter. When chasing that kind of result you need a willing and collaborative partner in crime. . .not just a client trying to tick a box. I think that’s why so many of the people I end up working with become friends - because they can feel the care I have for their outcome.

As a multi-killed creative, I come up with creative, write, direct, shoot, edit and colour grade all my work. That too, is frowned upon by many - “How can you specialise when you do so many things?” Well to that I would say, I’ve been doing this so many things for 20 years now and after a while, you get to understand what you need to be doing and know when you need to surround yourself with the right people to achieve an outcome outside what you can handle yourself. It’s not an ego thing, I shop something out if it’s the right thing to do - but I am certainly not afraid to do the lions share of the work when I know I’ll put in the extra 50% to get the result I can visualise and it doesn’t have to cost the client any extra. At the end of the day, it’s my brand that the work carries too, not just my clients’ so we both need to be happy with the standard.

In 2021 I was honoured to be granted Accreditation from the Australian Cinematographers Society for my body of work, which when peer reviewed was deemed worthy. I still can’t help but think I somehow snuck in the side door while nobody was looking, but I’m deeply grateful for it and strive to do it honour every time I pick up a camera.

I’m a Husband and a Dad - got a couple of beautiful little girls that I love going out and shooting with whenever we get a chance - who both love crafting images too. And as a result, I’ll routinely take projects that will allow me to travel with the family where clients can realise the additional benefit of longer shoots in remote locations. That’s always fun and allows us to mix business and pleasure in a really enjoyable way. . .

Anyway - that’s enough about me for now. . .if you want to know any more. . .pick up the phone. Nothing better I like than having a chat - especially about creativity, camera’s, movies, cooking, BBQ’s or travel.

Thanks for taking the time. Let’s make something cool one day. 😜
